This week we are hosting a video games programming tutorial. The tutorial will show you how to program in C# and XNA and how to make a simple video game. It’s sure to be informative and fun so stop by to learn something new! The tutorial will be on Thursday at 5pm in the MacNeill Lecture Theatre.

Upcoming AGM
Next week we will be hosting our annual general meeting. There will be food and drink at the reception and we will be heading to the pub afterwards. Come along if you’re interested in joining the committee or if you just want some friendly chats. It will be on next Friday the 23rd at 6pm in the Eliz rooms.

We are hosting a Starcraft 2 tournament on Wednesday at 6pm in the DUCSS room. Bring your laptops if you have them and enjoy some of Blizzard’s finest. There will be a prize for the winner, so now is the time to show off your skills!

If any of you are interested in running for PRO (Public Relations Officer) of DUCSS, please send us an example of your photoshop skills before the AGM at the end of March. You will be making an a3 sized poster, for the AGM, attracting people to the event and showing off your artistic talent. Send it to ducss@csc.tcd.ie.

Film Showing: Swordfish
Later today we’re having a showing of the awesome hacker film Swordfish, starring names such as John Travolta, Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman. It’ll be on this evening at 6pm in the Joly Theatre so make sure to come along for a laugh.

Intersocs LAN
This weekend there’s another great Intersocs LAN being held in Trinity Halls starting at around 6pm on the night. Several societies are involved in bringing this to you, those being TCD Netsoc, DCU Redbrick, UCD Netsoc and of course ourselves. If you’re in any way interested in gaming then come along on the night, previous LANs have been a great success and were enjoyed by everyone involved. If you ARE coming, any spare ethernet cables or power blocks would be much appreciated as it isn’t uncommon for there to be a shortage of them on the night!

Starcraft 2 Matches
We’re gauging interest for an evening of Starcraft 2 matches next week, currently planned on being played on Wednesday 22nd. If you play Starcraft 2 and would be interested in some friendly matches against other DUCSS members, or want a chance to show off your incredible micro, then be sure to email ducss@csc.tcd.ie stating your interest in playing and we’ll be in touch with the final details! Try and get your emails in by Sunday night to allow for us to get match-ups finalised.

Missing Person: Paul Bunbury
Unfortunately DCU student Paul Bunbury is still missing since Thursday 2nd of February. He was last spotted at approximately 6:20pm that evening near the O2 (Point Village) Depot. Players: David R vs Conall O

From the very start of the game Conall was doomed as Dave scout rushed and quickly disassembled Conall’s macro was quickly decimated.
However Conall was able to respond in a fantastic show of both macro and micro by producing a barracks away from the main battle.
Which lasted all of 2 minutes.

Winner: David

Game 2:
Players: Eoin F vs Robbie M

With Eoin reaching the Feudal age seconds before Robbie we knew a battle of an epic scale was about to ensue.
With a fairly standard stupid non-hun build it would appear that Robbie was king of derp from the opening,
leading one of his scouts to be walled in and COMPLETELY obliterated… by villagers…
As Robbie built a stupidly generic army, not taking advantage of any the huns perks, Eoin was able to harass Robbie and make a fool out
of his incredibly terrible micro. Eoin was able to disperse Robbie’s army by running a scout through the ranks dispersing the force, allowing for a few successful harasses. Alas…despite Robbie’s incredible derpery he bested Eoin in the end with an incredible lol trebuche paladin push…
For future reference it is advisable to keep your trebuche’s OUT of range of castles, and to not allow the monks in the rear to get slaughtered.
After a solid 5 minutes of Robbie’s control bindings running out of control and his horde of horsies running around in circles not attacking anything…
Eoin was somehow bested.

Winner: Robbie… somehow?

Game 3(final):
Players: David R vs Robbie M

Dave opening again with a decent production of scouts, Robbie had a fairly standard macro opening… i think, as i started typing this as they started.
Robbie had a fantastic derp though, losing his scout to a single villager in true derp micro style. Dave was able to trim Robbie’s expos down while
expanding resource collection. Meanwhile Robbie mustering up a stronger force was able to successfully not notice villagers on outlaying resources getting slaughtered….and then the ones in his main centre. Dave danced around Robbie with a large force of cav archers, shaving a bit off Robbie’s forces each time. Robbie’s castle’s proved difficult for Dave, after calling in a few rams, Dave took a hit however his experience in starcraft stood to him spawning infestor like trebuchet’s cutting a hole in his defences, Robbie for once in his life responded well with pikes which Dave took a hefty blow. With an amazing display of glitching, an amazing invisible-tree bottleneck formed, with robbie’s troops dying to Dave’s skirmishers, however after a tactical retreat(he ran away as he was scared) Robbie was able to wipe out the force of lightly armoured ranged units.
A large battle manifested as Robbie threw a large force into Dave’s army… in an attempt to strike a castle… getting ruined…Dave, feeling(unnecessarily) threatened threw everything into Robbie’s base, destroying anything Robbie had.
Meanwhile on Robbie’s outlying utopia’s of prick villages began battening down the hatches as Dave’s raiding force cut a swathe through the remaining of Robbie’s force, with glorious victory resounding through the room.

AOE Tournament
We will be hosting our Age of Empires 2 tournament this Wednesday at 6pm in the DUCSS room. If you have already signed up. Please come ready to play. The tournament will most likely be 1v1 but this is subject to change if the numbers are unexpectedly high.

Coder Dojo Talk
We are pleased to announce we will be having a talk by Coder Dojo in association with Netsoc. Coder Dojo are a charity who teach underprivileged children to code. They have many “Dojos” set up around the country. They will be talking about themselves, the work they do and how you can get involved. The talk will take place in East End Lecture Theatre 3 at 6pm on Thursday.

We have an Intersocs LAN planned for the upcoming fortnight. It will be in association with Netsoc and a few other societies. More information to follow.

One of RedBrick’s, DCU’s networking society, members has gone missing. His name is Paul Bunbury, also known as Bunbun in #intersocs. He has not been seen since last Thursday and his friends and family are looking for any information you might have.

First of all this week we are hosting a back-to-college night featuring a showing of the great Pixar film WALL-E, which will be followed by a trip to the Longstone pub for platters and general revelry. The film will be shown at 6pm this Thursday in the Macneill lecture theatre, make sure to come along for some laughs and food afterwards.

– Better Room PCs –
Santa paid a visit to DUCSS over the break too and was nice enough to gift us with some shiny new parts for the room PCs. We have one brand new system along with three of the machines receiving upgrades, and even one new screen! On top of this the room has been given a general clear-out and there is now noticeably less clutter scattered around.

– Games Tournaments ?? —
A number of our members have expressed an interest in having DUCSS gaming tournaments hosted over the space of a few days or even weeks, and we think this is a great idea. If you would be interested in participating in a tournament for any games, please email us (ducss@csc.tcd.ie) with your name and a list of the games you’d like to see played. Titles suggested so far have been the likes of Starcraft 2, League of Legends and Age of Empires 2. If there’s enough demand for any one game we’ll do our best to organise a tournament for it so do make sure to give us your opinions.
